Nato Black

COLOR FAMILY

Description

🏁 Get the exact tone real vehicles wear. Nato Black is formulated for scale modelers who won't settle for 'close enough' when the judges — or their own eye — start looking for flaws.

Nato Black reproduces a colour standardised for military use, part of a tradition of official camouflage and equipment-colour references developed through the 20th century so that allied forces, and later manufacturers, could match paint consistently across different vehicles and equipment. NATO's standardised camouflage colours were developed during the Cold War to give allied forces a common, mutually recognisable colour reference across different national equipment.

Nato Black is a brush-on acrylic colour that is formulated for hand-brushing directly from the pot, with a pigment load tuned for 1:35, 1:48 and 1:72 figures and small detail areas where an airbrush would be impractical. It self-levels well, reducing visible brush strokes on smaller surfaces.

💡 Laboratory Application Tips

  • Preparation (Primer): A Black or Grey Primer works best under this dark tone, reinforcing depth and helping the colour reach full density in fewer coats.
  • Painting Technique: Load the brush lightly and apply in thin, multiple layers rather than one thick coat; letting each layer dry fully between passes avoids visible brush marks and keeps fine details, like faces and uniform trim, crisp.
  • Finishing: A brush-applied Matte or Satin varnish, thinned slightly with water, protects the finished colour and unifies the sheen across a figure or small assembly without pooling in recesses.

⚠ Chromatic Fidelity Notes

Real Scale vs. Miniature: This formula is adjusted to counter the "scale effect," so light reflection on the miniature stays proportional to the real vehicle or object rather than looking artificially pale or dark.

Visual note: Product photos are for reference only. The full three-dimensional depth and true pigment brilliance only become visible once the model is painted and properly clearcoated.
