Panther Black Crystal: sparkling black with depth

Panther Black Crystal belongs to Audi's crystal-effect family, finishes with a finer, more sparkling particle than standard pearl. At first glance it reads as a deep black, but in sunlight the surface glitters with tiny highlights that give the paint an almost jewel-like depth. It was offered on sporty S and RS models and top-end Audis in the 2010s. For modelers it is a way to add sophistication to a black build, especially on large, flowing panels where the effect has room to show under a gloss clear.

The problem with pearls

Pearl effects show every mistake: wet passes cluster the pearl into blotches, and uneven coats change the colour from panel to panel. Controlled, even, slightly drier passes give a smooth, consistent shimmer.

How to apply

1. Shake the bottle for at least 60 seconds.
2. Prime with a black primer and let it dry fully.
3. Airbrush straight from the bottle, no thinning needed. Use a 0.2–0.4 mm nozzle at around 20 PSI (1.4 bar) and apply light, cross-hatched coats, letting each one flash off before the next.
4. Keep the airbrush moving at a constant distance for an even effect.
5. Let the paint cure overnight before masking or clear-coating.
6. Seal with a water-based clear coat: gloss for a factory shine, or satin or matte for work vehicles and interiors.
7. Clean the airbrush with water before the paint dries.

Shelf life

Estimated shelf life of more than 12 months when stored tightly closed between +10 °C and +28 °C, away from frost and direct sunlight. Shake well before use; if the paint has thickened or separated and does not remix, do not use it.
